Without that boundary, others are no longer truly “other.” Their suffering is felt directly, not as an abstract concern but as something intimate and immediate. Compassion then no longer requires effort, discipline, or moral obligation; it flows naturally, like a reflex. It is not cultivated, but revealed. Emptiness is not cold or nihilistic, but deeply connective. In seeing that nothing exists independently, one also sees that everything is inseparable, and from that recognition, genuine compassion arises spontaneously and without strain.

“If you want to know your past life, look at your present condition.
If you want to know your future life, look at your present actions.”

This teaching attributed to Guru Rinpoche expresses the Buddhist principle of karma in a very direct way. Our present circumstances are not random; they are shaped by causes and actions from the past. In the same way, our future is not predetermined by fate but is being created right now through the choices we make. The quote invites responsibility rather than fatalism. Instead of worrying about the past or speculating about the future, it encourages awareness of our current behavior, intentions, and actions. By acting with wisdom, compassion, and mindfulness today, we plant the seeds for a more positive future experience.

This piece features an extract of the profound terma known as “Buddhahood Without Meditation: Advice for Making One’s Own True Face Evident as the Great Perfection That is the Inherent Nature”. It’s most commonly known among Tibetans as Nang-Jang, which might be rendered: “Refining Apparent Phenomena”. The work was revealed by the Terton Dudjom Lingpa (1835-1904).

Dudjom Lingpa’s account is in the form of a journal describing a number of visions and dreams that he experienced throughout his life. Indeed much of the text consists of Dudjom Lingpa quoting the deities and masters he encountered on these occasions. The knowledge he gained during his experiences spans the range of teachings on the “View” of the Great Perfection approach of the Nyingma school. It is a direct transmission so powerful that just hearing it read aloud ensures that the listener will escape the suffering of cyclic existence.

The top line of this piece features the title of the work. Below that I’ve included roughly the equivalent of the first page of this treatise which consists of hundreds of pages. I’ve chosen to combine three distinct Tibetan script styles.

Chagdud Tulku offered the following words in the introduction to the book “Buddhahood Without Meditation”, which I wish to echo.

“Dharmakaya, the entire vast array of atemporal and pristine purity;
sambhogakaya, the entire vast array of an unceasing display of peaceful and wrathful deities;
nirmanakaya, the entire vast array that tames any being in any way necessary:
I bow with devotion to Dudjom Lingpa, tamer of beings.”

The Heart Sutra is one of the most profound and concise scriptures in Tibetan Buddhism, encapsulating the essence of *Prajñāpāramitā* (Perfection of Wisdom). It teaches the doctrine of *Śūnyatā* (emptiness), emphasizing that all phenomena lack inherent existence. Central to the sutra is the phrase, “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form,” illustrating the inseparability of appearance and emptiness. In Tibetan Buddhism, the *Heart Sutra* is recited for purification, insight, and overcoming delusion. It is a key text for developing wisdom and realizing the true nature of reality.

This is a famous quote by Guru Rinpoche. In it he cautions us against carelessness in the face of realization. “The view as vast as the sky” refers to recognizing emptiness, openness, and the non-dual nature of reality. It is a view free from fixation and beyond designations. Yet this vastness must never become a license for carelessness. “Conduct as fine as barley flour” refers to being exquisitely attentive to cause and effect, ethics, and compassion in everyday life.
