This quote, attributed to Patrul Rinpoche points to a profound shift in perception. When emptiness is realized, the sense of a solid, separate self dissolves. Without that boundary, others are no longer truly “other.” Their suffering is felt directly, not as an abstract concern but as something intimate and immediate. Compassion then no longer requires effort, discipline, or moral obligation; it flows naturally, like a reflex. It is not cultivated, but revealed. Emptiness is not cold or nihilistic, but deeply connective. In seeing that nothing exists independently, one also sees that everything is inseparable, and from that recognition, genuine compassion arises spontaneously and without strain.
