Patrul Rinpoche’s words point directly to the simplicity of being present. We suffer by carrying the past forward, anticipating what has not yet happened, and continually trying to manipulate our experience into something different. Yet beneath all of this activity is an innate wakefulness that does not need to be improved or corrected. Even appearances, however beautiful, frightening, painful, or confusing, need not be rejected. They can simply arise and dissolve within awareness.
