This piece features the Tibetan word for Karma, “Le” repeated and arranged in three concentric rings. Together the rings form a shape resembling a wheel. In Tibetan Buddhism, the wheel, or khorlo (Sanskrit: chakra), is a powerful symbol representing the cycle of samsara—the endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. It symbolizes the repetitive nature of human existence, driven by ignorance, attachment, and aversion.
Karma, or Le, plays a central role in perpetuating the repetitive cycle of samsara. This piece, therefore, aims to symbolize the manner in which karma creates the framework for the wheel of samsara. Furthermore, samsara is said to be comprised of three realms, the desire realm, form realm and formless realm. Each of the “Le” rings in represent one of samsara’s realms.
In the center of the wheel we find a double dorje in golden color. In Buddhism, the dorje symbolizes the unshakable stability of enlightenment and the transcendence of duality. The double dorje specifically embodies the absolute stability and power of Buddha’s wisdom, cutting through ignorance and illusion. It also represents the inherent unity of wisdom and compassion. It’s placement at the center of the wheel represents the key to liberation from samsara, namely the teachings of the Buddha.
