This piece features the mantra for Green Tara repeated three times in a circle. Tara’s seed syllable TAM is featured in green in the center.
Green Tara is a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism, symbolizing compassion, action, and swift assistance in overcoming obstacles. As an embodiment of the Bodhisattva of compassion, Tara is believed to have emerged from a tear of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion, who wept over the world’s suffering. Among her 21 forms, Green Tara is the most widely worshipped. She is often depicted seated in a relaxed, yet ready-for-action posture, with her right leg extended and her left leg folded, signifying her willingness to step into action to aid those in distress. Her green color represents vitality and active benevolence. Green Tara is associated with the protection against fears and the removal of obstacles. Devotees often chant her mantra, “Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha,” to invoke her swift intervention and blessings.
