“Form is Emptiness. Emptiness is Form.”
This is a quote from the Buddhist text known as the Heart Sutra, written in the Tibetan Language. The two sentences are aligned vertically in opposition to one another. The first sentence is on the left side and written from bottom to top and the one of the right side is written from top to bottom.
The Heart Sutra, a cornerstone of Mahayana Buddhism, succinctly captures the essence of wisdom and the nature of reality. Known for its brevity and depth, it focuses on the concept of emptiness (Śūnyatā), asserting that all phenomena are devoid of inherent existence. This text is often chanted and studied, offering a pathway to understanding the unity of form and emptiness. The Sutra features the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara’s dialogue with the disciple Śāriputra, unraveling the profound truth that “form is emptiness, emptiness is form.” This insight is pivotal for transcending ordinary perception and attaining enlightenment, encapsulating the core of Buddhist philosophical thought.
