There are several words in the Tibetan language for compassion. Each term conveys different aspects and depths associated with the concept of compassion.
This piece features the Tibetan word **ཐུགས་རྗེ་ (thugs rje)**. This term is composed of two parts: “thugs” (ཐུགས་), meaning “heart” or “mind,” and “rje” (རྗེ་), meaning “lord” or “noble.” Together, **thugs rje** conveys the idea of a noble or compassionate heart/mind. It denotes a deep sense of empathy and concern for the suffering of others, embodying the compassionate nature of enlightened beings such as Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), the Bodhisattva of Compassion.
Compassion, or “karuna,” is central to Buddhism. It involves recognizing and alleviating the suffering of others, and it’s fundamental for achieving enlightenment. Compassion fosters a sense of interconnectedness and empathy, which helps in reducing selfish desires and ego. It encourages ethical behavior, promoting peace and harmony within communities. By cultivating compassion, Buddhists aim to break the cycle of samsara, the continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. It is practiced through loving-kindness meditation (metta) and compassionate actions. Compassion not only benefits others but also aids in personal spiritual growth, leading to a more profound inner peace and understanding.
