“Avoid all evil,
cultivate good,
and purify your mind.
This is the teaching of the buddhas.”
– Dharmapada
This verse from the Dhammapada distills the entire Buddhist path into three movements of training. “Avoid all evil” aligns with the First Turning, which emphasizes ethical discipline and freedom from harmful actions that generate suffering. “Cultivate good” resonates with the Second Turning, where compassion and wisdom are developed through insight into emptiness and interdependence, transforming motivation itself. “Purify your mind” reflects the Third Turning, pointing to the innate clarity and Buddha-nature revealed when obscurations are removed. Together, these lines show that liberation unfolds through conduct, view, and realization, progressively refining behavior, intention, and awareness into awakening.
