This piece features the Tibetan word for emptiness, སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་, pronounced roughly “tong pa nyi.”
For this piece I’ve chosen a stylized variation of the Tibetan Tsuring script.

“Let go of what has passed.
Let go of what may come.
Let go of what is happening now.
Don’t try to figure anything out.
Don’t try to make anything happen.
Relax, right now, and rest.”
– Tilopa

The Tibetan word for equanimity is **བཏང་སྙོམས་**, pronounced roughly “tang nyom.”
It literally means “letting go and remaining balanced” – a state of even-mindedness free from attachment and aversion. In Buddhist practice, equanimity is one of the Four Immeasurables, cultivated to develop impartial love and compassion toward all beings.

The Tibetan word tsewa (བརྩེ་བ་) refers to a deep, heartfelt love rooted in warmth, connection, and compassion. Unlike romantic affection, tsewa embodies an open, tender attitude toward others, recognizing shared humanity and interdependence. It is central to Tibetan Buddhist teachings, where cultivating tsewa nurtures empathy, reduces self-centeredness, and fosters genuine happiness. Tsewa reflects love not as attachment, but as boundless, caring presence toward all beings.

This quote by His Holiness The Dalai Lama expresses the idea that compassion is the essence of all true spiritual practice. Rather than emphasizing rituals, doctrines, or labels, he points to kindness as the universal path that transcends religious boundaries. It suggests that how we treat others – with empathy, warmth, and care is the deepest expression our faith.

In Buddhism, the syllable OM is a sacred sound symbolizing the essence of all enlightened qualities. It represents the body, speech, and mind of the Buddhas, as well as the practitioner’s own potential for purity in these three aspects. OM is often placed at the beginning of mantras, such as Om Mani Padme Hum, to consecrate and energize the recitation. It is said to contain the vibration of ultimate reality—the unity of all phenomena beyond duality.

This piece features the sacred syllable “Om” in the Tibetan Petsug script. I’ve utilized a brush with Japanese sumi ink. Sumi ink, developed in ancient China and perfected in Japan, is made from soot mixed with animal glue and molded into solid sticks. Artists grind it with water on an inkstone to create rich, smooth black tones prized for their depth, permanence, and subtle gradation.

The Mani Mantra, Om Mani Padme Hung, is one of the most sacred mantras in Tibetan Buddhism. It is associated with Avalokiteśvara (Chenrezig in Tibetan), the embodiment of compassion.
Each syllable of the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra is traditionally associated with a color and a quality of purification that corresponds to one of the six realms of existence. Here’s a concise overview:
OM – White:
Represents the purification of pride and ego, transforming them into the wisdom of equality. It is linked with the body and corresponds to the realm of the gods (devas).
MA – Green:
Purifies jealousy and envy, transforming them into accomplishing wisdom. It is connected with the speech and the realm of the demigods (asuras).
NI – Yellow:
Purifies attachment and desire, transforming them into discriminating wisdom. It relates to the mind and the realm of humans.
PAD – Blue:
Purifies ignorance and delusion, transforming them into the wisdom of reality. It corresponds to the realm of animals.
ME – Red:
Purifies greed and possessiveness, transforming them into discriminating awareness. It is linked with the realm of hungry ghosts (pretas).
HUM – Dark Blue (or sometimes black):
Purifies anger and hatred, transforming them into mirror-like wisdom. It represents the unity of method and wisdom, and corresponds to the realm of hell beings.
Together, the colors form a spectrum of purification that transforms negative emotions into enlightened qualities, symbolizing the complete path to awakening and compassion embodied by Avalokiteśvara.
