This is piece features a portion of the Heart Sutra.

The Heart Sutra is one of the most profound and concise scriptures in Tibetan Buddhism, encapsulating the essence of *Prajñāpāramitā* (Perfection of Wisdom). It teaches the doctrine of *Śūnyatā* (emptiness), emphasizing that all phenomena lack inherent existence. Central to the sutra is the phrase, “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form,” illustrating the inseparability of appearance and emptiness. In Tibetan Buddhism, the *Heart Sutra* is recited for purification, insight, and overcoming delusion. It is a key text for developing wisdom and realizing the true nature of reality.

In Tibetan, “chag tsal lo”is a respectful phrase often found in Buddhist liturgy and teachings. Literally, chag (ཕྱག་) literally means “hand,” tsal (འཚལ་) means “to prostrate, bow, or pay homage,” and lo (ལོ་) is a particle indicating emphasis or finality. Together, it conveys “I pay homage” or “I bow down.” It expresses deep reverence toward enlightened beings, the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), or a sacred principle. In practice, it embodies humility, devotion, and the recognition of the sacred qualities of the object of veneration, both physically through prostration and mentally through heartfelt respect.

“All that is conditioned is impermanent,
All that is tainted is suffering,
All phenomena are empty and devoid of self,
Nirvana is peace.”

The Four Seals (sometimes called the Four Dharma Seals) are fundamental philosophical principles that define the Buddhist view. Any teaching that contains all four is considered to be authentically Buddhist, regardless of tradition.

For this piece I chose birch bark as the writing surface. Birch bark was one of the early materials used for writing in Tibetan manuscripts, particularly during the early diffusion of Buddhism into Tibet (7th–9th centuries). Before the widespread availability of paper, birch bark (along with palm leaves and wooden boards) served as an important medium for copying sacred texts and official documents.
